The Cost of a Laundry Renovation in NZ – 7 Factors to consider

Renovating a laundry room can vary significantly in cost, depending on various factors such as the size of the room, the extent of renovations required, and the materials chosen. Here is how those costs break down.

1. Assessing Your Needs and Budget

Before you can determine the exact cost of a laundry renovation, it’s crucial to assess your needs and set a realistic budget. Are you looking for a complete overhaul or just a few upgrades? Take the time to carefully consider what you want to achieve with your laundry renovation project, as this will help guide your budgeting process.

2. Materials and Fixtures

The choice of materials and fixtures can significantly impact the overall cost of your laundry renovation. From flooring and cabinetry to countertops and sinks, each element comes with its own price tag. It’s essential to research different options and compare prices to find the best balance between quality and affordability.

3. Structural Changes

If your laundry room requires structural changes, such as knocking down walls or altering plumbing and electrical systems, the cost of your renovation will increase. Structural modifications often involve professional services and may require building permits, so it’s essential to factor these additional expenses into your budget.

4. Labour Costs

Labour costs play a significant role in determining the overall cost of a laundry renovation. Hiring professionals, such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and painters, can add up quickly. The complexity of the project and the time required for completion will influence the labour costs, so it’s advisable to obtain multiple quotes from reputable contractors to ensure you’re getting a fair price.

5. Storage and Organisation Solutions

Adding storage and organisation solutions can enhance the functionality of your laundry room. Cabinets, shelves, and other storage systems can help keep your laundry supplies organised and within easy reach. However, these additions will contribute to the overall cost of your renovation. Consider your storage needs and budget accordingly.

6. Plumbing and Electrical Upgrades

If your laundry room requires plumbing or electrical upgrades, the costs can vary depending on the extent of the work needed. Updating old pipes, installing additional outlets, or upgrading to energy-efficient lighting fixtures are all factors that can impact the final price of your renovation.

7. Additional Features and Upgrades

Do you want to add extra features to your laundry room? Consider features like a built-in ironing station, a folding table, or a utility sink. While these additions can improve the functionality and convenience of your space, they will also contribute to the overall cost.

How Much Does a Laundry Renovation Cost in NZ?

Now that we’ve explored the various factors that can influence the cost of a laundry renovation let’s take a closer look at the estimated price range you can expect in New Zealand. Keep in mind that these figures are approximate and can vary depending on your location and specific requirements.

  • Basic Laundry Renovation: $3,000 – $8,000
  • Mid-Range Laundry Renovation: $8,000 – $15,000
  • High-End Laundry Renovation: $15,000 – $25,000+

It’s important to remember that these figures are rough estimates and should be used as a general guideline. The actual cost of your laundry renovation will depend on the unique factors mentioned earlier.

Factors Affecting the Cost of Laundry Room Renovations – Basic, Mid-Range, and High-End Laundry Renovations in NZ

When considering a laundry renovation in New Zealand, it’s essential to understand the factors that influence the cost at different levels: basic, mid-range, and high-end. Here’s a closer look at each range, including the materials and brands relevant to New Zealand.

Basic Laundry Renovation

A basic laundry renovation focuses on functional improvements without extensive customisation. Here are the key factors and materials to consider:

  • Materials: For basic renovations, cost-effective materials are commonly used in New Zealand. Some options include laminate countertops, which are available from brands like Formica or Wilsonart. These brands offer a range of colours and styles suitable for basic renovations. Standard cabinetry made of particleboard or medium-density fibreboard (MDF) can be sourced from local suppliers like Kaboodle or Bunnings Warehouse. Vinyl flooring from brands like Tarkett or Gerflor is a durable and budget-friendly choice.
  • Fixtures: Basic renovations often include standard sinks and faucets. Brands such as Methven or Mondella offer affordable options that provide functionality and reliability. Basic lighting fixtures from brands like Mercator or Brilliant Lighting can illuminate the space effectively.
  • Labour Costs: As basic renovations involve less complex work, labour costs in New Zealand tend to be lower compared to more intricate projects.
  • Storage Solutions: Basic renovations may include standard shelves or cabinets for laundry supplies. Brands like Kaboodle or IKEA offer modular storage solutions that are cost-effective and easily customisable.

Mid-Range Laundry Renovation

Mid-range laundry renovations offer more customisation options and slightly higher-quality materials. Here are the factors and materials to consider for a mid-range renovation in New Zealand:

  • Materials: Mid-range renovations often incorporate solid surface countertops, which are available from brands like Caesarstone or Silestone. These brands offer a wide selection of colours and patterns to suit various design preferences. Custom cabinetry made of plywood or melamine can be sourced from local manufacturers or custom cabinet makers. For flooring, ceramic or porcelain tiles from brands like Tile Space or Tile Depot provide durability and a more polished look.
  • Fixtures: Upgraded fixtures like stainless steel sinks from brands such as Oliveri or Franke, and modern faucets from Methven or Caroma, can add a touch of sophistication to a mid-range laundry renovation. Stylish lighting fixtures from brands like David Trubridge or ECC Lighting can elevate the overall aesthetic.
  • Labour Costs: With additional customisation and attention to detail, labour costs for mid-range renovations in New Zealand are typically higher than basic renovations.
  • Storage Solutions: Mid-range renovations often incorporate custom storage solutions. Local cabinet makers can provide tailored cabinetry to maximize storage space and enhance functionality.

Brands like Granite Workshop or Caesarstone offer a range of high-quality options with beautiful aesthetics and durability. Custom cabinetry made of high-quality hardwood, such as oak or walnut, can be sourced from local craftsmen or specialized cabinet makers. For flooring, hardwood options from brands like Forté or Boral provide an elegant and timeless look.

These high-end fixtures add a touch of opulence and elevate the overall design.
  • Labour Costs: High-end renovations require skilled craftsmanship and careful attention to detail, resulting in higher labour costs in New Zealand.
  • Storage Solutions: High-end renovations prioritize ample and customised storage options. Local cabinet makers or luxury kitchen suppliers can provide bespoke cabinetry and specialized storage systems tailored to the specific needs of the laundry room.

When planning a laundry renovation in New Zealand, it’s important to consider the cost implications at different levels: basic, mid-range, and high-end. By understanding the materials available and the brands relevant to New Zealand, you can make informed decisions and create a laundry space that suits your budget and aesthetic preferences.

The Importance of Quality Hinges in Mid-Range Laundry Renovations

Hinges play a crucial role in the functionality, durability, and overall aesthetic of your cabinetry, including mid-range laundry renovations. While often overlooked, investing in good quality hinges is essential for a well-designed and long-lasting laundry room. Let’s explore the importance of quality hinges and highlight renowned brands like Blum and Hafele.

Smooth Functionality and Longevity

Good quality hinges ensure smooth and effortless operation of your cabinet doors, allowing for easy access to storage and hassle-free daily use. Cheap or inferior hinges may result in doors that stick, sag, or fail to close properly over time, compromising the functionality and convenience of your laundry room.

By choosing high-quality hinges from trusted brands like Blum and Hafele, you can enjoy the benefits of their advanced engineering and precise manufacturing. These brands have built a reputation for producing hinges that offer superior functionality, ensuring that your cabinet doors open and close smoothly, even with frequent use.

Enhanced Durability and Long-Term Performance

In a high-traffic area like the laundry room, durability is of utmost importance. Good quality hinges are designed to withstand the rigors of everyday use, including the opening and closing of cabinet doors and the weight of stored items. They are made using strong materials and proven engineering to ensure long-term performance and durability.

Brands like Blum and Hafele are renowned for their commitment to quality and durability. Their hinges are manufactured to strict standards, using high-grade materials that withstand the test of time. By investing in hinges from reputable brands, you can have peace of mind knowing that your mid-range laundry renovation will stand up to daily wear and tear.

Adjustable and Concealed Features

Another advantage of high-quality hinges is their adjustability, allowing for precise alignment of cabinet doors. This feature ensures that doors are properly aligned, avoiding any gaps or unevenness that can compromise the overall aesthetic of your laundry room. Adjustability is particularly important when dealing with irregularities in cabinet construction or changes that may occur over time due to settling.

Additionally, concealed hinges are a popular choice for mid-range laundry renovations as they provide a clean and streamlined look. These hinges are hidden from view when the cabinet doors are closed, contributing to a clean and elegant appearance. How Long Does a Laundry Renovation Take, and Do You Need Consent?

A straightforward laundry refresh — new cabinetry, benchtop and a tidy-up of the existing layout — usually takes one to two weeks once materials are ready. A larger job that moves the sink, adds a room or reworks the plumbing and electrical runs longer, often three to four weeks, because trades have to be booked in sequence.

Most of that time is not on-site. At Little Giant Interiors the design and measure step comes first, then cabinetry is manufactured in our factory (typically a couple of weeks), and installation follows in a few days. Building the cabinetry off-site keeps the disruption in your home short.

Does a laundry renovation need a building or plumbing consent?

It depends on the scope. Swapping cabinetry, benchtops and finishes in the same footprint is usually straightforward. Moving or adding plumbing, drainage or electrical, or building a new laundry into a previously unplumbed space, can trigger consent and must be done by the right licensed trades. Certain plumbing and drainage work is restricted building work in New Zealand. Before you commit to moving services, confirm what your project needs with a licensed plumber and Auckland Council — we can point you in the right direction as part of the design process.

💡 Design tip: Keeping the sink and appliances in their existing positions is the single biggest way to control a laundry budget. Every metre you move plumbing adds trade cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a laundry renovation cost in NZ?

A laundry renovation in New Zealand typically costs $3,000–$8,000 for a basic refresh, $8,000–$15,000 for a mid-range fit-out, and $15,000–$25,000+ for a high-end laundry. Cabinetry, benchtop, flooring and whether you move plumbing or electrical are the biggest drivers.

What does a laundry room renovation cost for cabinetry alone?

For cabinetry on its own, a basic run sits around $800–$1,500, mid-range $1,500–$3,000, and high-end $3,000–$6,000 or more, depending on materials, size and hardware. Custom cabinetry made to your exact layout uses the space better than flat-pack.

How long does a laundry renovation take?

A basic refresh in the existing layout usually takes one to two weeks once materials are ready. Larger jobs that move plumbing or add a room can take three to four weeks. Most of that time is manufacturing off-site, so the on-site disruption is short.

Does a laundry renovation need consent?

Swapping cabinetry and finishes in the same footprint is usually straightforward. Moving or adding plumbing, drainage or electrical can require consent and must use licensed trades, as some plumbing work is restricted building work. Confirm your project with a licensed plumber and Auckland Council before moving services.

Can I renovate my laundry on a budget?

Yes. Keep the existing plumbing positions, choose cost-effective materials like laminate benchtops and melamine cabinetry, and prioritise good storage over premium finishes. A budget-friendly laundry refresh commonly runs $1,500–$3,500.

What are the best budget-friendly materials for a laundry?

Laminate or timber-look benchtops, melamine or moisture-resistant board cabinetry, and vinyl or laminate flooring give durable, easy-clean results at a sensible cost. Standard hinges and simple hardware keep the budget in check without sacrificing function.

Is it worth getting custom cabinetry for a small laundry?

Often, yes. A small or awkward laundry is exactly where custom cabinetry earns its keep, because it uses every centimetre of an odd wall, corner or nook that flat-pack units leave empty. It is also where full-height storage makes the biggest difference.

Can I DIY a laundry renovation to save money?

You can take on simpler tasks like painting, but plumbing, drainage and electrical work should be done by licensed trades, and precise cabinetry installation is best left to professionals. A poor install shows quickly in a room that gets daily use.

Are there hidden costs in a laundry renovation?

The common surprises are old or non-compliant plumbing and wiring, hidden water damage, and the cost of moving services. Allowing a contingency of around 10–20% of the budget covers most of them.
