Why the gap between flatpack and custom is so wide
Flatpack is cheap because it’s built to a fixed size in a factory you’ll never see, then assembled on site. It works in a square, standard laundry. The number people forget on a kitset laundry is assembly. A kitset price is the price of the parts. Flat-pack cabinets arrive as panels, dowels and a bag of cams, and a laundry full of them is a weekend if you are handy and a fortnight if you are not. Pay someone to assemble and fit them and the gap between kitset and semi-custom narrows a long way.
The second one is the filler panel. Fixed-increment boxes almost never add up to the exact width of your wall, so the shortfall gets covered with a strip of matching board. In a wide kitchen that disappears. In a 1.6m villa laundry, a 90mm filler is a meaningful chunk of the only wall you have.
Buying laundry cabinets online: what the photos do not tell you
Plenty of people start by searching for laundry cabinets online, and for a straightforward room that is a reasonable place to begin. Just read past the render. Check three things on any online listing before you add to cart: whether the carcass is moisture-resistant board or standard particle board, whether the runners and hinges are named brands or simply described as soft-close, and whether the price includes the benchtop, the kickboard and the delivery.
Anything sold as “custom” online is usually made-to-order from a set of configurable widths rather than measured to your room. That is a fair product at a fair price, but it is not the same as someone standing in your laundry with a laser measure.
